Early Life
Marc Andreessen was born on July 9, 1971 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was raised in a middle-class family and was the youngest of three children. His father was a computer programmer and his mother was a librarian. Andreessen was an avid reader and was interested in computers from an early age. He taught himself to program at the age of 10 and was accepted into the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign at the age of 16.
Career
At the University of Illinois, Andreessen worked on a project to develop a web browser called Mosaic. The project was funded by the National Science Foundation and was the first widely used web browser. After graduating in 1993, Andreessen co-founded Netscape Communications Corporation with Jim Clark. Netscape was the first company to offer a web browser for the public and quickly became the most popular web browser in the world.
In 1998, Andreessen left Netscape and founded Loudcloud, a web hosting and services company. The company was later renamed Opsware and was acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 2007. In 2009, Andreessen co-founded venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz with Ben Horowitz. The firm has invested in many successful technology companies such as Facebook, Airbnb, and Twitter.
In 2011, Andreessen was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. He is also a board member of Facebook, eBay, and Hewlett-Packard.
