Lothar-Günther Buchheim

Lothar-Günther Buchheim (1918-2007) was a German author, painter, and photographer. He is best known for his novel Das Boot, which was adapted into a successful film in 1981.

Early Life

Lothar-Günther Buchheim was born on February 6, 1918 in Weimar, Germany. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a painter. He was raised in a wealthy family and received a classical education. He studied law at the University of Munich and graduated in 1941.

World War II

During World War II, Buchheim served in the German Navy as a war correspondent. He was assigned to the U-boat U-96, which was commanded by Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock. He documented the crew's experiences in a series of photographs and writings. He also wrote a book about his experiences, titled U-Boat War, which was published in 1958.

Writing Career

After the war, Buchheim returned to Germany and began writing. His first novel, The Boat, was published in 1973 and was an immediate success. The novel was adapted into a successful film in 1981, directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

Buchheim also wrote several other novels, including The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (1975), The Tin Drum (1979), and The Ogre (1986). He also wrote several non-fiction books, including The Art of the Submarine (1977) and The Art of the U-Boat (1980).

Later Life

In addition to writing, Buchheim was also an accomplished painter and photographer. He had several exhibitions of his work in Germany and abroad. He also wrote several books about art and photography.

Buchheim died on February 22, 2007 in Munich, Germany. He was 89 years old.
