Early Life
Leonard Maltin was born in New York City on December 18, 1950. He was raised in Teaneck, New Jersey, and attended Teaneck High School. He was an avid movie fan from an early age, and began writing reviews for his school newspaper at the age of 15. After graduating from high school, he attended New York University, where he earned a degree in journalism.
Career
Maltin began his career as a film critic in the early 1970s, writing for various publications including Variety and the Los Angeles Times. In 1975, he published his first book, The Great Movie Comedians, which was a critical look at the history of comedy in film.
In the late 1970s, Maltin began writing for the television show, Entertainment Tonight. He was the show's film critic for over 20 years, and was also a regular contributor to the show's "Movie Minute" segment.
