Lela Rochon was born on April 17, 1964 in Los Angeles, California. Lela was born to a medical caretaker professional mother named Zelma Staples and a business official father known as Samuel Staples. Rochon studied at Cerritos High School in Cerritos, California, from where she proceeded to California State University, Dominguez Hills to continue her instruction. Upon the finishing of her college education, she was granted a BA in Broadcast Journalism, with minors in Sociology and Theater.

Lela has gotten married twice in her life. Her first marriage was to an American dancer, actor, and choreographer Shabba Doo. It kept going from 1982 to 1987. She later got married to well known American producer and movie director Antoine Fuqua in 1999.

Rochon is a mother of two and a stepmother to her better half's tyke from his past relationship. The relationship with Antoine produced a little girl, Asia Faqua, on July 28, 2002, and a boy, Brando Fuqua, in May 2004.

In July 2019, Lela's husband was spotted kissing model Nicole Murphy in Italy. The "Training Day" director and Murphy were shot at an inn in Ischia, Italy, during the Ischia Global Festival, where Fuqua is set to get the director of the year award. Both looked completely loose as they tasted on espresso before heading off to the pool for a dip. They were snapped kissing on the lips.

Lela Rochon's acting career started in 1984 with the film, Breakin. Following her high-octane performance, she scored another acting gig to feature in Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo. She proceeded to appear in several motion pictures like Waiting to Exhale as Robin Stokes, Stewardess School, The Wild Pair, Into the Homeland, Boomerang, and The Wayan Bros. In 1995, The Wayan Bros was her first stint in a popular TV show. She enjoyed her time on set because she got to work for the famous comedic Wayan family.

At some point in 2009, she had an appearance in her significant other's crime drama, Brooklyn's Finest. The A-lister's most recent project is Reversion, where she played the mother of Aja Naomi King.
