Early Life and Career

After graduating, he began his career as a reporter for the Lynchburg News & Advance. He then moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a reporter for the Washington Star.
In 1979, Tomlinson was hired as the editor of Reader's Digest, a position he held for nearly two decades. During his tenure, he helped to expand the magazine's reach and influence, and he was credited with helping to make it one of the most widely read magazines in the world.
Chairmanship of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
In 2002, Tomlinson was appointed chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) by President George W. Bush. During his tenure, he was criticized for his efforts to introduce more conservative programming to public television and radio. He was also accused of attempting to politicize the CPB, and he was eventually forced to resign in 2005.
Broadcasting Board of Governors
In 2006, Tomlinson was appointed chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), a position he held until 2009.
