Ken Starr is an American lawyer and former judge who served as the independent counsel in the Whitewater investigation during the Clinton administration. He is best known for his role in the investigation of President Bill Clinton, which led to his impeachment in 1998.
Early Life
Ken Starr was born on July 21, 1946 in Vernon, Texas. He was raised in a conservative Christian family and attended a Baptist church. He attended Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, Texas, where he was an honor student and a member of the debate team. He then attended George Washington University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1968. He went on to earn his law degree from Duke University in 1973.
Career
After graduating from law school, Starr worked as a law clerk for Chief Justice Warren Burger of the Supreme Court. He then served as a federal prosecutor in San Antonio, Texas, and later as a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Kirkland & Ellis. In 1983, he was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
In 1994, Starr was appointed as the independent counsel to investigate the Whitewater scandal involving President Bill Clinton. The investigation eventually led to the impeachment of the president in 1998. After the investigation, Starr returned to private practice and served as the dean of Pepperdine University School of Law from 2004 to 2010.
In 2010, Starr was appointed as the chancellor and president of Baylor University, a private Christian university in Waco, Texas. He served in this role until 2016, when he resigned amid a scandal involving the university's handling of sexual assault allegations against members of the football team.
Legacy
Ken Starr is remembered as one of the most controversial figures in American politics. His investigation of President Bill Clinton led to the president's impeachment, and his tenure as chancellor of Baylor University was marred by scandal.
