Early Life

Kate Bornstein was born in 1948 in New Jersey. Bornstein was assigned male at birth and was raised in a Jewish family. Bornstein attended Rutgers University, where they studied theater and philosophy. After graduating, Bornstein joined the United States Navy and served for four years. During this time, Bornstein began to explore their gender identity and eventually came out as transgender in 1986.

Gender Theory

After coming out as transgender, Bornstein began to explore gender theory and wrote extensively on the subject. In 1994, Bornstein published their first book, Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us, which explored the concept of gender identity and expression.
