Early Life
Karl Malone was born on July 24, 1963 in Summerfield, Louisiana. He was the youngest of nine children born to Shirley and Shedrick Malone. His father was a laborer and his mother was a homemaker. Growing up, Karl was an avid basketball fan and was determined to make it to the NBA.
High School and College Career
Karl attended Summerfield High School, where he was a standout basketball player. He was named Louisiana's Mr. Basketball in 1981 and was also named a McDonald's All-American. After high school, Karl attended Louisiana Tech University, where he continued to excel on the court. He was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 1984 and was a two-time All-American.
NBA Career
Karl was drafted by the Utah Jazz in the 1985 NBA Draft. He quickly established himself as one of the best players in the league, averaging double-doubles in his first three seasons. He was named an All-Star for the first time in 1988 and was named the NBA MVP in 1997 and 1999. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team 11 times and the All-Defensive Second Team twice.
Karl was a key member of the Jazz teams that reached the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998. He was known for his physical style of play and his ability to score in the post.
