Early Life
Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. was born on November 8, 1945 in Bath, New York. He was the youngest of five children born to Joseph James DeAngelo Sr. and Kathleen DeAngelo. His father was a World War II veteran who worked as a mechanic and his mother was a homemaker. DeAngelo was raised in a strict Catholic household and attended Catholic school. He was an average student and was known to be a bit of a troublemaker.
Military Service
In 1964, DeAngelo enlisted in the United States Navy and served for four years. During his time in the Navy, he was stationed in Vietnam and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After his discharge in 1968, DeAngelo returned to New York and attended college at the University of New York at Albany. He graduated in 1972 with a degree in criminal justice.
