Early Life
Itzhak Perlman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel on August 31, 1945. His parents, Shoshana and Chaim Perlman, were Polish Jews who had immigrated to Israel in the 1930s. He began playing the violin at the age of three and was soon recognized as a prodigy. At the age of five, he was accepted into the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv, where he studied with Rivka Goldgart.
At the age of ten, Perlman made his debut with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also invited to perform at the White House for President John F. Kennedy. In 1958, he moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He studied with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay.
Career
In 1964, Perlman made his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also performed as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
In addition to his orchestral performances, Perlman has also appeared as a soloist in recitals and chamber music concerts. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including Pinchas Zukerman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Emanuel Ax. He has also performed with jazz musicians, including Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis.
Perlman has also composed music for film and television. He has written the scores for the films The Red Violin and The Devil's Violinist, as well as the television series The Wonder Years.
