Early Life
Jon Meacham was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on May 20, 1969. He attended The McCallie School, a private all-boys school in Chattanooga, and then went on to the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1991. He then went on to earn a master's degree in religion from Vanderbilt University in 1993.
Career
Meacham began his career as a journalist, working as a reporter for The Chattanooga Times. He then moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a political writer for Newsweek magazine. In 2006, he was named editor of the magazine, a position he held until 2010.
In 2008, Meacham published his first book, American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 2009. He has since written several other books, including Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power (2012), Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George H.W. Bush (2015), and The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels (2018).
Meacham is also a contributing editor at Time magazine and a contributing writer for The New York Times Book Review. He is a frequent guest on television news programs, including Morning Joe, The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report.
Philanthropy
Meacham is a strong supporter of education and has served on the boards of several educational institutions, including the University of the South, Sewanee: The University of the South, and the McCallie School. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Society of American Historians.
