Harald Sohlman was a Swedish businessman and entrepreneur who was instrumental in the development of the Swedish economy in the early 20th century. He was born in 1871 in Stockholm, Sweden, and was the son of a wealthy merchant. He attended the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and graduated with a degree in engineering in 1892.
Early Career
After graduating, Sohlman began his career as an engineer in the Swedish Navy. He quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became the Chief Engineer of the Navy in 1901. During this time, he was responsible for the development of several new technologies, including the first Swedish submarine.
In 1906, Sohlman left the Navy and began working in the private sector. He joined the Swedish-American Line, a shipping company, and quickly rose to become the company's managing director. Under his leadership, the company became one of the largest shipping companies in the world.
Business Ventures
In 1912, Sohlman left the Swedish-American Line and founded his own company, Sohlman & Co. The company was involved in a variety of businesses, including banking, insurance, and real estate. Sohlman was also involved in the development of several new industries, including the Swedish steel industry.
In addition to his business ventures, Sohlman was also an active philanthropist. He donated large sums of money to various charities and was a major supporter of the Swedish Red Cross. He also founded the Sohlman Foundation, which provided scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
