Early Life
John L. Allen Jr. was born in 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in a Catholic family and attended Catholic schools throughout his childhood. He graduated from John Carroll University in 1986 with a degree in English and Communications. After college, he worked as a reporter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the National Catholic Reporter.
Career
In 2000, Allen joined the National Catholic Reporter as a senior correspondent. He covered the Vatican and the Catholic Church for the paper for more than a decade. During this time, he wrote several books on the Catholic Church, including All the Pope's Men: The Inside Story of How the Vatican Really Thinks and The Future Church: How Ten Trends are Revolutionizing the Catholic Church.
In 2011, Allen left the National Catholic Reporter to become the senior Vatican analyst for CNN. He was the network's primary source for news and analysis on the Catholic Church and the papacy. In 2014, he left CNN to become the editor of Crux, an independent Catholic news site.
In addition to his work as a journalist, Allen is also a popular speaker and lecturer. He has spoken at universities, churches, and conferences around the world. He has also appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, and NPR's Fresh Air.
