Early Life
Jane Goodall was born in London, England on April 3, 1934. She was the only child of Mortimer and Margaret Goodall. From a young age, she was fascinated by animals and nature. She was particularly drawn to chimpanzees, which she first encountered at the London Zoo.
Goodall attended the University of Cambridge, where she studied ethology, the study of animal behavior. She also worked as a secretary and a film production assistant. In 1957, she met the famous paleontologist and anthropologist Louis Leakey, who invited her to join his research team in Tanzania.
Gombe Stream Research
In 1960, Goodall began her groundbreaking research at Gombe Stream National Park. She observed the chimpanzees in their natural habitat, and was the first to document their use of tools. She also observed their complex social behavior, which was previously thought to be exclusive to humans.
Goodall’s research revolutionized the field of primatology and changed the way we view animals. Her work has been featured in numerous books, films, and television programs.
Conservation and Activism
