James L. Brooks is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for his work on the television series The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, and The Simpsons. He has won three Academy Awards, four Emmy Awards, and a Golden Globe Award.
Early Life
James L. Brooks was born on May 9, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised in North Bergen, New Jersey, and attended North Bergen High School. After graduating, he attended New York University, where he studied film and television.
Career
In the late 1960s, Brooks began his career in television, writing for the series Room 222 and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He went on to create and produce the series Taxi, which ran from 1978 to 1983. He also wrote and directed the feature films Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, and As Good As It Gets.
In 1989, Brooks co-created the animated television series The Simpsons, which has become one of the most successful and longest-running television series of all time. He served as executive producer of the show until 1998.
In addition to his work in television and film, Brooks has also written and directed several stage plays, including The War of the Roses and The People vs. Larry Flynt.
