Ibtisam Lutfi is a Palestinian-American poet, author, and activist. She is best known for her work in the fields of social justice, human rights, and the arts. Born in the West Bank in 1967, she has lived in the United States since the age of nine.

Early Life

Ibtisam Lutfi was born in 1967 in the West Bank city of Ramallah. She was raised in a large family of seven siblings, and her parents were both teachers. Growing up, she was exposed to the harsh realities of the Israeli occupation of Palestine. She was also exposed to the beauty of Palestinian culture, which she would later draw upon in her writing.

At the age of nine, Ibtisam and her family moved to the United States. She attended high school in California, and then went on to study at the University of California, Berkeley. She graduated with a degree in English Literature in 1991.

Writing and Activism

Ibtisam Lutfi began writing poetry as a teenager, and her work was published in various literary journals. In 1994, she published her first book of poetry, “The Palm of My Heart: Poetry of the Palestinian People”. The book was well-received, and it was followed by two more collections of poetry, “The Cry of the Dove” (1996) and “The Butterfly’s Burden” (1998).

In addition to her writing, Ibtisam has been an active advocate for Palestinian rights. She has spoken at numerous conferences and events, and has been a vocal critic of the Israeli occupation of Palestine. She has also been involved in various campaigns to raise awareness of the Palestinian cause.

In recent years, Ibtisam has become increasingly involved in the arts. She has been a featured speaker at the Palestine Festival of Literature, and has been a guest lecturer at universities around the world.
