Gene Keady is an American college basketball coach who is best known for his 25-year tenure as the head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball team. Keady was born in Larned, Kansas on March 21, 1941. He attended Kansas State University, where he played basketball and graduated with a degree in physical education in 1963.
Early Coaching Career
After graduating from Kansas State, Keady began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas. He then moved on to Arkansas State University, where he served as an assistant coach from 1965 to 1971. In 1971, Keady was hired as the head coach at Western Kentucky University, where he led the Hilltoppers to a record of 81-41 in four seasons.
Purdue Boilermakers
In 1975, Keady was hired as the head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers. During his 25-year tenure at Purdue, Keady led the Boilermakers to a record of 512-270, with 19 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight Big Ten regular season titles, and two Big Ten Tournament titles. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year five times and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.
Legacy
Keady is widely regarded as one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time. He is remembered for his passion and intensity on the sidelines, as well as his ability to develop players and build successful teams. He is also remembered for his trademark red sweater, which he wore during games.
Keady retired from coaching in 2005 and was succeeded by his longtime assistant, Matt Painter. He currently serves as a special assistant to the athletic director at Purdue. Keady's legacy lives on at Purdue, where his name is honored with the Gene Keady Court at Mackey Arena. He is also the namesake of the Gene Keady Classic, an annual basketball tournament held in West Lafayette, Indiana.
