Early Life
Donald Sutherland was born on July 17, 1935 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. He was the son of Dorothy Isobel and Frederick McLea Sutherland, who was a salesman and a WWI veteran. He was raised in a strict Presbyterian household and attended the local high school. After graduating, he attended Victoria College at the University of Toronto, where he studied engineering.
Career
Sutherland's acting career began in the early 1960s when he appeared in a few Canadian television shows. He then moved to England, where he appeared in several British films and television shows. In 1970, he starred in the classic war comedy M*A*S*H, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
In the late 1970s, Sutherland starred in the horror classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers and the drama Ordinary People, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He then went on to star in a number of other films, including The Hunger Games, The Italian Job, and The Mechanic.
In the 2000s, Sutherland began appearing in television shows, such as Dirty Sexy Money and Commander in Chief. He also appeared in the hit miniseries The Pillars of the Earth and the Netflix series House of Cards.
