Early Life
Richard Alva Cavett was born on November 19, 1936 in Nebraska. He was the son of Alva Cavett, a former state senator, and his wife, Erabelle. He was raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned a degree in English.
Career
After graduating from college, Cavett moved to New York City and began working as a writer for the Tonight Show with Jack Paar. He quickly rose to prominence as a witty and intelligent interviewer, and was soon given his own show, The Dick Cavett Show. The show ran from 1968 to 1975, and featured a wide variety of guests, including politicians, musicians, actors, and authors.
Cavett also wrote for several publications, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Esquire. He also wrote several books, including Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Offbeat Stories from My Life in Television.
In the 1980s, Cavett returned to television with a new show, The Dick Cavett Show. The show ran until 1993, and featured a variety of guests, including politicians, musicians, actors, and authors.
