Early Life

Derryn Hinch was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1944. He was raised in a working-class family and attended Melbourne High School. After graduating, he worked as a journalist for various newspapers and radio stations. He also served in the Australian Army Reserve from 1965 to 1971.

Career

In 1975, Hinch began his career in television, hosting the popular current affairs program The Derryn Hinch Show. He also hosted the radio program Hinch Live on 3AW from 1982 to 1987. During this time, he became known for his outspoken views on social justice and human rights issues.

In 1987, Hinch was convicted of contempt of court for revealing the name of a convicted child rapist. He was sentenced to three months in prison, but was released after serving only 50 days.
