Early Life
David Prowse was born on July 1, 1935 in Bristol, England. He was the son of a coal merchant and a seamstress. He was raised in a working-class family and attended Bristol Grammar School. He was an avid sportsman and excelled in rugby, cricket, and weightlifting. He was also a talented actor and appeared in several plays while in school.
Career
After graduating from school, Prowse joined the Royal Marines and served for three years. He then moved to London to pursue a career in acting. He appeared in several television shows and films, including the 1967 James Bond film, You Only Live Twice. He also appeared in the 1971 film, A Clockwork Orange, as the character, Julian.
In 1977, Prowse was cast as Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy. He was chosen for the role due to his imposing physical stature and deep voice. He was the physical presence of Darth Vader, while James Earl Jones provided the voice. Prowse also appeared in the 1980 film, The Empire Strikes Back, and the 1983 film, Return of the Jedi.
Later Life
After the Star Wars trilogy, Prowse continued to act in television and film. He appeared in the 1985 film, The Return of the Jedi, and the 1987 film, The Empire Strikes Back. He also appeared in the television series, Doctor Who, and the television movie, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
In addition to acting, Prowse was also a fitness instructor and bodybuilder. He wrote several books on fitness and nutrition, and was a regular guest on television shows. He also served as a goodwill ambassador for the British government.
Prowse passed away on November 28, 2020 at the age of 85. He was remembered for his iconic role as Darth Vader, as well as his contributions to the fitness and nutrition industry. He was survived by his wife, Norma, and their three children.
