Charley Pride is an American country music singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is one of the most successful African-American country music singers of all time, having sold over 70 million records worldwide. He is also the first African-American to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Early Life

Charley Pride was born on March 18, 1938, in Sledge, Mississippi. He was the seventh of eleven children born to a sharecropper family. His father, Mack, was a sharecropper and his mother, Tessie, was a homemaker. Growing up, Charley was exposed to a variety of music, including gospel, blues, and country.

At the age of 14, Charley began playing guitar and singing in local churches and at school events. He was also a talented baseball player and was offered a contract to play in the Negro Leagues. However, he chose to pursue music instead.

Career

In 1966, Charley Pride signed with RCA Records and released his debut single, “The Snakes Crawl at Night.” The song became a hit and peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. He followed this success with a string of hits, including “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’” and “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone.”

Throughout the 1970s, Charley Pride continued to have success on the country music charts. He released several albums, including Charley Pride Sings Heart Songs, which was certified gold. He also won several awards, including the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award in 1971.
