David Blunkett

Early Life

David Blunkett was born on 6th June 1947 in Sheffield, England. He was born into a working-class family and was the youngest of four children. His father was a factory worker and his mother was a cleaner. Blunkett was born with a severe visual impairment, which left him almost completely blind. Despite this, he was determined to succeed and attended a special school for the blind.

Education

Blunkett was an excellent student and was accepted into the University of Sheffield, where he studied Politics and Sociology. He graduated with a first-class degree in 1969 and went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Industrial Relations. He also became a lecturer at the university, teaching courses in industrial relations and social policy.

Political Career

In 1974, Blunkett was elected to the Sheffield City Council and quickly rose through the ranks. He was elected as the leader of the council in 1980 and held the position for the next ten years. During this time, he was instrumental in the regeneration of the city and was credited with transforming it into a modern, vibrant city.

In 1987, Blunkett was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Sheffield Brightside. He quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the Labour Party and was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet in 1992. In 1997, he was appointed as the Secretary of State for Education and Employment in Tony Blair’s first cabinet.
