Early Life and Education
Dale Chihuly was born in 1941 in Tacoma, Washington. He was raised in a family of five, with his father working as a butcher and his mother as a homemaker. Chihuly was exposed to art from a young age, as his mother was an avid painter. He attended the University of Washington, where he studied interior design and architecture. During his time at the university, Chihuly was introduced to glassblowing and quickly became fascinated with the medium.
Career
In 1968, Chihuly co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. The school was the first of its kind in the United States and quickly became a hub for glass artists from around the world. Chihuly’s work began to gain recognition in the 1970s, and he was invited to exhibit his work in museums and galleries around the world. In the 1980s, Chihuly began to experiment with large-scale installations, which he called “chandeliers.” These installations were made up of hundreds of individual glass pieces and were often suspended from the ceiling.
In the 1990s, Chihuly’s work began to gain even more recognition, and he was invited to create installations in some of the world’s most prestigious museums, including the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
