Bobby Clarke is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played his entire 15-year National Hockey League (NHL) career with the Philadelphia Flyers. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
Early Life
Bobby Clarke was born on August 13, 1949 in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada. He was the youngest of five children born to his parents, Bill and Mary Clarke. His father worked in the local copper mine and his mother was a homemaker. Growing up, Bobby was an avid hockey fan and was determined to make it to the NHL.
At the age of 14, Bobby joined the Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He quickly established himself as a top player and was named the league's Most Valuable Player in 1967. He was also selected to the Canadian National Junior Team and helped lead them to a gold medal at the 1968 World Junior Championships.
NHL Career
In 1969, Bobby was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round of the NHL Amateur Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 1969-70 season and quickly established himself as one of the league's top players. He was named to the NHL All-Star Team in each of his first five seasons and was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player in 1973 and 1975.
In 1974, Bobby was named the Flyers' team captain and led them to two Stanley Cup championships in 1974 and 1975. He was also named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the MVP of the playoffs in both years. He continued to be a dominant force in the NHL for the remainder of his career and was named to the NHL All-Star Team in each of his last five seasons.
Legacy
Bobby Clarke retired from the NHL in 1984 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987. He was also named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and his number 16 jersey was retired by the Flyers in 1984.
After his retirement, Bobby served as the Flyers' general manager from 1984 to 1990 and was the team's president from 1994 to 2006. He also served as the general manager of Team Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics and helped lead them to a gold medal.
Today, Bobby is still involved with the Flyers organization and serves as a senior advisor. He is also a member of the Order of Canada and was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He is a true hockey legend and his legacy will live on for generations to come.
