is an American journalist and television news anchor. He is best known for his work as a co-anchor of ABC News' World News Tonight and as a correspondent for ABC News' Nightline.
Early Life
Bob Woodruff was born on August 18, 1961 in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He is the son of Frances and Robert Woodruff, a businessman. He attended the Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and later graduated from the University of Michigan in 1983 with a degree in political science.
Career
Woodruff began his career in journalism in 1989 as a reporter for WCBS-TV in New York City. He then moved to ABC News in 1996, where he served as a correspondent for World News Tonight and Nightline. In 2005, he was named co-anchor of World News Tonight alongside Elizabeth Vargas.
In 2006, Woodruff was seriously injured while covering the Iraq War. He was hit by a roadside bomb while traveling in an Iraqi military convoy. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for 36 days. After his recovery, he returned to ABC News and continued to report on the war in Iraq.
In 2008, Woodruff and his wife, Lee, founded the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which provides support to veterans and their families. He also wrote a book about his experience in Iraq, titled In an Instant: A Family's Journey of Love and Healing.
In 2011, Woodruff left ABC News to become an anchor for Rock Center with Brian Williams on NBC News. He left NBC in 2013 and returned to ABC News as a special correspondent.
In 2016, Woodruff was named co-anchor of ABC News' 20/20. He currently serves as a special correspondent for ABC News and is a contributor to ABC News' Good Morning America.
