Early Life
Bob Bartlett was born on August 24, 1903 in Valdez, Alaska. His parents, Robert and Mary Bartlett, were both of Irish descent. He attended the University of Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1925. After graduating, he returned to Alaska and worked as a teacher and principal in the small town of Cordova.
Legal Career
In 1929, Bartlett was admitted to the Alaska Bar Association and began practicing law in Fairbanks. He quickly established himself as a prominent lawyer in the area and was elected to the Alaska Territorial House of Representatives in 1932. He served in the House until 1940, when he was elected to the Alaska Territorial Senate.
Political Career
In 1945, Bartlett was appointed to the United States Senate by President Harry S. Truman. He served in the Senate until 1959, when Alaska was granted statehood. He was then elected to the United States Senate from Alaska, where he served until 1968. During his time in the Senate, he was a strong advocate for Alaska's statehood and was instrumental in the passage of the Alaska Statehood Act of 1958.
