Early Life
Robert Christgau was born on April 18, 1942 in New York City. He was raised in a middle-class Jewish family in Queens, New York. His father was a postal worker and his mother was a homemaker. He attended Queens College, where he studied English and American literature.
Career
Robert Christgau began his career as a music critic in 1967, writing for Esquire magazine. He quickly gained recognition for his witty and insightful reviews of popular music. He was soon hired by The Village Voice, where he wrote a weekly column called "Consumer Guide" for over 30 years. In this column, he reviewed hundreds of albums and singles, giving them a letter grade from A+ to F. He was known for his sharp wit and his ability to identify trends in popular music.
In addition to his work as a music critic, Robert Christgau also wrote several books on popular music. His first book, Any Old Way You Choose It, was published in 1973 and was a collection of his reviews from The Village Voice. He also wrote Grown Up All Wrong: 75 Great Rock and Pop Artists from Vaudeville to Techno, which was published in 1998.
