Alexander Belyayev (1884-1942) was a Russian science fiction writer and playwright. He is best known for his novel The Air Seller (1926), which is considered to be one of the first works of Soviet science fiction.
Early Life
Alexander Belyayev was born in 1884 in the city of Tver, Russia. He was the son of a wealthy merchant and was educated at the Tver Gymnasium. After graduating, he studied law at the University of St. Petersburg.
Career
Belyayev began his career as a playwright, writing several plays that were performed in St. Petersburg. He also wrote several short stories and novels, including The Air Seller (1926), which is considered to be one of the first works of Soviet science fiction.
In the 1930s, Belyayev became a member of the Soviet Writers' Union and was appointed to the editorial board of the magazine Science and Life. He also wrote several science fiction stories for the magazine, including "The Planet of the Dead" (1935) and "The Flying City" (1936).
Belyayev's most famous work is his novel The Air Seller, which tells the story of a scientist who discovers a way to make air heavier than normal air, allowing it to be sold as a commodity. The novel was a huge success and was adapted into a film in 1936.
Death
Belyayev died in 1942 at the age of 58. He is remembered as one of the pioneers of Soviet science fiction and his works continue to be read and studied today.
Legacy
