Benjamin Hall

Benjamin Hall was a Welsh politician and industrialist who served as the first Commissioner of Works in the United Kingdom. He was born in Llanfrechfa, Monmouthshire, Wales on April 27, 1802. He was the son of Benjamin Hall, a farmer, and his wife, Mary.

Early Life

Hall was educated at the local grammar school in Llanfrechfa and then went on to study at the University of Oxford. After graduating, he returned to Wales and became a partner in his father's business. He was also involved in local politics, becoming a magistrate and a member of the Monmouthshire County Council.

Political Career

In 1837, Hall was elected to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament for Monmouthshire. He was re-elected in 1841 and 1847. During his time in Parliament, Hall was a strong advocate for the industrialization of Wales. He was also a vocal supporter of the Great Western Railway, which was built to connect London to South Wales.

In 1855, Hall was appointed as the first Commissioner of Works in the United Kingdom. In this role, he was responsible for the construction and maintenance of government buildings, including the Houses of Parliament. He was also responsible for the construction of the Clock Tower, which is now known as Big Ben.

Later Life

In 1868, Hall retired from politics and returned to Wales. He continued to be involved in business and was a major shareholder in the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company. He also served as the chairman of the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company.

Hall died on August 20, 1867, at the age of 65. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary's Church in Llanfrechfa.

Legacy

Hall is remembered as a major figure in the industrialization of Wales and for his role in the construction of the Houses of Parliament. He is also remembered for his role in the construction of the Clock Tower, which is now known as Big Ben. His legacy lives on in the many monuments and buildings that he helped to create.
