Anne Rice is an American author of gothic fiction, Christian literature, and erotica. She is best known for her popular and influential series of novels, The Vampire Chronicles, which revolves around the fictional character of Lestat de Lioncourt. Rice has written over 30 books, including novels, short story collections, and non-fiction works.
Early Life
Anne Rice was born Howard Allen Frances O'Brien on October 4, 1941 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the second of four daughters born to Howard O'Brien, an insurance agent, and Katherine Allen O'Brien, a homemaker. Rice was raised in a Catholic household and attended Catholic schools. She was an avid reader from a young age, and was particularly drawn to the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, and the Brontë sisters.
Rice attended St. Mary's Dominican High School in New Orleans, where she was an honor student and graduated in 1959. She then attended Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas, where she studied political science, philosophy, and religion. Rice left college after two years and returned to New Orleans, where she worked as a waitress and a clerk in a department store.
Writing Career
In 1969, Rice published her first novel, Interview with the Vampire, which was an immediate success. The novel was adapted into a 1994 film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Rice followed up with The Vampire Lestat in 1985, and the novel was adapted into a 2002 film.
Rice's other works include the novels The Witching Hour, Lasher, and Taltos, as well as the short story collections The Mummy and Other Tales of the Living Dead and The Wolf Gift Chronicles. She has also written several non-fiction works, including the memoir Called Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession.
Rice has won numerous awards for her writing, including the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel in 1987 for The Vampire Lestat and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2003.
Later Life
In 2002, Rice returned to the Catholic Church after a long period of atheism. She has since written several books about her faith, including Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt and Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana.
Rice currently lives in Rancho Mirage, California with her husband, the poet and painter Stan Rice. She continues to write and is currently working on a new novel.
