Ann Compton is an American journalist and news anchor who has been a part of the ABC News team since 1973. She is best known for her coverage of the White House during the administrations of seven presidents, from Gerald Ford to Barack Obama.
Early Life
Ann Compton was born in 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri. She grew up in a family of journalists, with her father working as a newspaper editor and her mother as a reporter. She attended the University of Missouri, where she earned a degree in journalism.
Career
After graduating from college, Compton began her career as a reporter for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. She then moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a reporter for the Associated Press. In 1973, she joined ABC News as a White House correspondent.
During her time at ABC News, Compton covered the administrations of seven presidents, from Gerald Ford to Barack Obama. She was the first female reporter to be assigned to the White House full-time and the first female reporter to travel with a president on Air Force One.
Compton has also reported on major news events, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, and the September 11th attacks. She has interviewed numerous world leaders, including former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
In 2014, Compton retired from ABC News after 41 years of service. She was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame in 2015.
