Rosalie Anderson MacDowell was born on April 21, 1958 in Gaffney, South Carolina. She was born the little girl of Pauline Johnston and Marion St. Pierre MacDowell. Her father was a timber official and her mom was a music educator. MacDowell studied at Winthrop University. She has worked at McDonald's and Pizza Hut when she was in high school and had dreams of becoming an actress.

She was first married to Paul Qualley in 1986 however their married relationship couldn't keep going and they split in September 2000 after over a decade of marriage. From her first marriage, she has been honored with three children. A boy named Justin was born in 1986 and two girls, Rainey born in 1990, and Sarah Margaret Qualley was born in 1994. She was married to Rhett DeCamp Hartzog on November 2001 however soon got separated three years later on October 2004. She was also in a romantic association with Harvey Keitel in 1999 and Dennis Quaid in 2001.

Andie MacDowell, she started out as a model before appearing in the movies. She was found on an excursion to Los Angeles yet did not sign with Elite Model Management until 1978. She has appeared in "Vogue" and has worked with top brands including Armani, Anne Klein, and Yves Saint Laurent. She appeared on TV and in Manhattan ads for Calvin Klein.

She had her first film part in "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes" in 1984. While she acted in the film, Glenn Close was chosen for voicing her lines, due to MacDowell's thick Southern articulation.
