Early Life

Alun Oldfield Davies was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1891. He was the son of a coal miner and grew up in a working-class family. He attended the local grammar school and excelled in his studies, eventually graduating with honors. After graduation, he worked as a clerk in a local coal mine and then as a teacher in a local school.

Military Career

In 1914, Alun Oldfield Davies enlisted in the British Army and was assigned to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1916. He served in the Battle of the Somme and was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery and leadership. He was also awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his actions during the Battle of Passchendaele.

Post-War Career

After the war, Alun Oldfield Davies returned to Wales and resumed his teaching career. He also became involved in politics and was elected to the Welsh Assembly in 1921. He served as a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party from 1922 to 1929. During this time, he was a strong advocate for the rights of the working class and was instrumental in the passage of the Trade Disputes Act of 1927.

Later Life

In 1929, Alun Oldfield Davies was appointed to the post of Secretary of State for Wales. He held this position until his retirement in 1945. During his tenure, he was responsible for the establishment of the Welsh National Health Service and the Welsh Development Agency. He also worked to improve the education system in Wales and was instrumental in the passage of the Welsh Language Act of 1967.

Legacy

Alun Oldfield Davies was a respected politician and public servant who dedicated his life to improving the lives of the people of Wales. He was a passionate advocate for the rights of the working class and was instrumental in the passage of several important pieces of legislation.
