Krobo Edusei (1919-1995) was a Ghanaian politician and diplomat who served as the first Prime Minister of Ghana from 1957 to 1960. He was a key figure in the independence movement of Ghana and was instrumental in the country's transition to a democratic government.

Early Life

Krobo Edusei was born in 1919 in the town of Akim Oda in the Eastern Region of Ghana. He was the son of a cocoa farmer and was educated at the local mission school. After completing his education, he worked as a clerk in the colonial administration. He later joined the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), a political party that was formed to fight for the independence of Ghana.

Political Career

In 1951, Edusei was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Gold Coast, the first African to do so. He was a vocal advocate for independence and was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the formation of the Convention People's Party (CPP) in 1949. He was appointed Minister of Education in the CPP government in 1951 and was later appointed Minister of Finance in 1954.

In 1957, Edusei was appointed Prime Minister of Ghana, becoming the first African to hold the position. He was instrumental in the transition to a democratic government and was responsible for the establishment of the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Stock Exchange. He also oversaw the introduction of a new constitution and the establishment of the National Assembly.

Diplomatic Career

In 1960, Edusei resigned as Prime Minister and was appointed Ghana's Ambassador to the United Nations. He served in this role until 1966 and was a vocal advocate for African independence and the rights of African nations. He was also a member of the United Nations Security Council and was instrumental in the passage of the United Nations Charter.
