Zalmay Khalilzad is an Afghan-American diplomat and political scientist who has served in various high-level positions in the United States government. He is currently the United States Ambassador to the United Nations.
Early Life and Education
Khalilzad was born in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan in 1951. He attended the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1973. He then moved to the United States to pursue a master's degree in political science at the University of Chicago, which he completed in 1975. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Chicago in 1979.
Career
Khalilzad began his career in the United States government in 1985, when he was appointed to the National Security Council as a senior director for Near East and South Asian affairs. In 1989, he was appointed as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. In this role, he was responsible for representing the United States in the United Nations Security Council and other international organizations.
In 2001, Khalilzad was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Afghanistan. In this role, he was responsible for helping to rebuild the country after the fall of the Taliban. He also worked to promote democracy and human rights in the country.
In 2005, Khalilzad was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Iraq. In this role, he was responsible for helping to rebuild the country after the fall of Saddam Hussein. He also worked to promote democracy and human rights in the country.
In 2007, Khalilzad was appointed as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. In this role, he was responsible for representing the United States in the United Nations Security Council and other international organizations.
In 2018, Khalilzad was appointed as the United States Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation. In this role, he is responsible for leading negotiations with the Taliban to end the war in Afghanistan.
