Stephen Merchant is known as an English writer, comedian, and actor. He is most famous for creating The Office and Extras.

Stephen James Merchant was born on November 24, 1974 in Hanham, Bristol, United Kingdom. He was born to Jane Elaine and John Merchant. His mother worked as an attendant and his father worked as a delegate. His sister, Alexandra Merchant became an art director. Stephen Merchant was enrolled at Hanham High School and later got his liberal arts degree in Film and Literature from the University of Warwick.

A Career as a Writer

Stephen Merchant started his entertainment career as a high quality comedian in Bristol Comedy Box in 1997. He was then a part of a TV game show called "Blockbusters". He then worked at X FM London for a stretch of 7 years. He then teamed up with Ricky Gervais as a co-writer and co-director for the popular English sitcoms called The Office and Extras. Stephen is most famous for being the co-creator of the British version of the popular comedy sitcom, The Office. He also wrote and directed a couple of episodes of the American version of The Office.

He has co-hosted different episodes of the famous 'The Ricky Gervais Show' which won the bronze Sony Award. His other prominent credits include American Dad, The Mentalist, Drunk History, and An Idiot Abroad. He even provided the voice for the character 'Wheatly' in the Portal 2 computer game.

Merchant played "Caliban" in The Wolverine spin-off "Logan" in 2017. Merchant, alongside John Krasinski and Allyson Seeger, was the official producers of Dream Corp, LLC, an animated series made by Daniel Stessen on Adult Swim. The series was reported as a pilot in May 2014, and a full season was approved in November 2015. Jon Gries who was famous for the Lost drama TV played the main character.

Merchant appeared with Asim Chaudhry in odd couple Christmas excursion comedy "Click and Collect" on BBC One in 2018. Stephen likewise assumed a role in writing and directing 2019 comedy drama movie "Fighting with My Family".

In January 2020, it was announced that the film, Jojo Rabbit was added to the Oscar nominations list for the Best Picture category. Merchant has a supporting role in the film as Deertz.
