Richard Blumenthal was born on February 13, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. He is the son of Martin and Jane Blumenthal. His father was a successful real estate developer and his mother was a homemaker. Blumenthal attended Riverdale Country School in the Bronx and graduated from Harvard College in 1967. He then attended Yale Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Journal. After graduating from Yale in 1973, he served as a law clerk to Judge Jon O. Newman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Political Career
In 1982, Blumenthal was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives, where he served for four years. In 1984, he was elected to the Connecticut Senate, where he served for eight years. In 1990, he was elected Attorney General of Connecticut, a position he held for twenty years. During his tenure as Attorney General, he was a leader in the fight against tobacco companies and was instrumental in the passage of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.
In 2010, Blumenthal announced his candidacy for the United States Senate. He won the election with 55% of the vote and was sworn in as a United States Senator in January 2011.
