Philip Alfred Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970, in San Diego, California. Mickelson's career in golf started around the time he could walk. His folks, Phil and Mary, have regularly related the story of a youthful Phil fleeing from home at three years old, advising neighbors he was heading off to the fairway.

Phil Mickelson started an amateur golf career as a high schooler. He won 34 San Diego Junior Golf Association titles, utilizing his father's employment as a carrier pilot to score tickets to his different competitions. His mom accepted a temp position to help pay for his American Junior Golf Association play, which won him three sequential AJGA Rolex Player of the Year grants, and a full grant to Arizona State University.

In August 2018, it was reported that Mickelson and his long-term rival, Woods, would square off in a broadcast, one-on-one standoff in Las Vegas on November 23. Charged as a victor take-all match for $9 million, Mickelson said they were thinking about including a series of shots that included the longest drive, nearest to the opening, and longest putt. Unfortunately, the match never came to be.
