Early Life
Patrick Cockburn was born in London, England in 1945. He is the son of the late Claud Cockburn, a British journalist and author, and Patricia Arbuthnot, a British socialite. He was educated at Eton College and the University of Oxford, where he studied modern history.
Career
Cockburn began his career as a journalist in the 1970s, working for the Financial Times and The Independent. He has since worked for The Observer, The Sunday Times, and The Independent on Sunday. He has also written for The New York Review of Books, The London Review of Books, and The New Yorker.
Cockburn is best known for his coverage of the Middle East, particularly Iraq. He has reported from Iraq since the 1980s, and has written extensively about the Iraq War and its aftermath. He has also reported from Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syria, and other countries in the region.
Cockburn has won numerous awards for his work, including the Orwell Prize for Journalism in 2009, the James Cameron Prize for Journalism in 2010, and the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism in 2011. He was also named Foreign Commentator of the Year at the British Press Awards in 2012.
