Norbert Jacques (1895-1954) was a German novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He is best known for his novel, Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler, which was adapted into a series of films by Fritz Lang.
Early Life
Norbert Jacques was born in 1895 in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of a Jewish lawyer and a Catholic mother. He attended the University of Berlin, where he studied law and philosophy. After graduating, he worked as a journalist and wrote for several newspapers.
Writing Career
In 1921, Jacques wrote his first novel, Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler. The novel was a huge success and was adapted into a series of films by Fritz Lang. The novel was a psychological thriller about a criminal mastermind who uses his powers of manipulation to commit crimes.
Jacques went on to write several other novels, including The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933), The Testament of Dr. Mabuse Part II (1934), and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse Part III (1935). He also wrote several plays, including The Last Will of Dr. Mabuse (1932) and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933).
Jacques also wrote several screenplays, including The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933), The Testament of Dr. Mabuse Part II (1934), and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse Part III (1935). He also wrote the screenplay for the film M (1931), which was directed by Fritz Lang.
Later Life
In 1933, Jacques was forced to flee Germany due to the rise of the Nazi Party. He moved to Paris, where he continued to write. In 1940, he moved to the United States, where he wrote several screenplays for Hollywood films.
In 1954, Jacques died in Los Angeles, California. He was 59 years old.
Legacy
Norbert Jacques is remembered as one of the most influential German writers of the 20th century. His novel, Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler, was adapted into a series of films by Fritz Lang and is considered a classic of German cinema. His other works, including The Testament of Dr. Mabuse and The Last Will of Dr. Mabuse, are also highly regarded.
