Early Life
Louis Emil Denfeld was born on April 15, 1852 in the small town of La Crosse, Wisconsin. He was the son of a German immigrant, Emil Denfeld, and his wife, Mary. Louis was the youngest of four children and was raised in a strict Lutheran household. He attended the local public school and was an excellent student. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin, where he studied law.
Career
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Louis Emil Denfeld began his career as a lawyer in La Crosse. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and successful attorney. In 1878, he was appointed as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin. He held this position for four years and was highly respected by his peers.
In 1882, Denfeld was appointed as the Secretary of the Navy by President Chester A. Arthur. He served in this position for four years and was credited with modernizing the Navy and improving its efficiency. He also oversaw the construction of several new ships and the expansion of the Navy's fleet.
In 1889, Denfeld was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Germany. He served in this position for four years and was highly respected by the German government. He was also credited with helping to improve relations between the United States and Germany.
Later Life
After his tenure as Ambassador to Germany, Denfeld returned to the United States and resumed his law practice in La Crosse. He also served as a member of the Wisconsin State Senate from 1895 to 1897. In 1898, he was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Austria-Hungary. He served in this position for two years and was highly respected by the Austrian-Hungarian government.
In 1900, Denfeld retired from public service and returned to La Crosse. He died on April 15, 1915 at the age of 63. He was buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse.
