Julia Carin Cavazos was born on November 13, 1993 in Davenport, IA. She experienced childhood in Santa Clarita, California, where she started singing and performing around age 12. Julia's father's name is Juan Manuel "John" Cavazos, who later changed his name to John Michaels and her mom, Julie Doreen. Julia graduated from California State University, Northridge.

By her teen years, she had received the stage name Julia Michaels and was teaming up on music with professional songwriters Joleen Belle and Lindy Robbins. Alongside Belle and Robbins, Michaels formed melodies for such artists as Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran, Shakira, and Linkin Park. Julia wrote the Austin and Ally Theme with Belle. She co-wrote Fire Starter and Mill Movin'On with Lindy Robbins at 19 years old. At the 2016 Summer Olympics she co-performed "Carry Me" with Kygo in its ending ceremony.

Relationships

Julia previously dated a singer and record producer, Ari Staprans Leff otherwise known as Lauv. The relationship reached a conclusion in 2019. She wrote on her Instagram about the end of their romance.

Michaels released her introduction solo single, "Issues," in 2017. The tune turned into a hit on charts the world over, going multi-platinum in the U.S., Australia, and Norway. "Issues" likewise appeared on her presentation EP, Nervous System, which landed in 2017 on Republic. The seven-melody set crested in the Top 50 on the Billboard 200 and earned Michaels Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "Issues." In late 2017, she co-wrote and sang on U.K. electronic act Clean Bandit's hit single "I Miss You," which charted far and wide. She has been nominated for the MTV Video Music Award once and MTV Europe Music Awards twice.

In November 2019, Selena Gomez and long-term closest companion Julia Michaels got matching tattoos. The two singers inked matching lightning bolts on their hands, and when they clasp hands, the bolts point to each other.
