Julia Carin Cavazos was born on November 13, 1993 in Davenport, IA. She experienced childhood in Santa Clarita, California, where she started singing and performing around age 12. Julia's father's name is Juan Manuel "John" Cavazos, who later changed his name to John Michaels and her mom, Julie Doreen. Julia graduated from California State University, Northridge.

By her teen years, she had received the stage name Julia Michaels and was teaming up on music with professional songwriters Joleen Belle and Lindy Robbins.
