Early Life

Joseph A. Flaherty, Jr. was born on April 15, 1932 in New York City. He was the son of Joseph A. Flaherty, Sr., a successful businessman, and his wife, Mary. Joseph was raised in a middle-class family and attended Catholic schools throughout his childhood. He was an excellent student and was accepted into the prestigious St. John's University in New York City.

Education

At St. John's, Joseph majored in business and economics. He was an active member of the student body, participating in various clubs and organizations. He was also a member of the school's debate team and was a frequent speaker at campus events. After graduating with honors in 1954, Joseph went on to pursue a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University. He graduated with distinction in 1956 and was immediately hired by a prominent Wall Street firm.
