John Osteen was an American pastor, televangelist, and author. He was the founder and senior pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, one of the largest congregations in the United States. Osteen was born in Dallas, Texas, on August 21, 1921, to Wilbur and Daisy Osteen. He was the oldest of five children.
Early Life
John Osteen was raised in a Christian home and attended church regularly. He was baptized at the age of 12 and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior. He attended high school in Dallas and then went on to attend Baylor University, where he earned a degree in theology. After graduating, he served as a pastor in several churches in Texas.
Ministry
In 1959, Osteen founded Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. He was the senior pastor of the church for nearly 40 years. During his tenure, the church grew from a small congregation of 25 people to one of the largest churches in the United States, with over 40,000 members. Osteen was known for his passionate preaching style and his ability to connect with people. He was also a prolific author, writing several books on Christian living and faith.
Televangelism
In the late 1970s, Osteen began appearing on television, first on local stations and then on national networks. He was one of the first televangelists to reach a wide audience. His weekly television program, John Osteen Live, was broadcast on the Trinity Broadcasting Network and other networks around the world. He was also a frequent guest on other religious programs.
Legacy
John Osteen passed away in 1999 at the age of 78. He left behind a legacy of faith and service that continues to inspire people around the world. His son, Joel Osteen, is the current senior pastor of Lakewood Church and continues to preach the same message of hope and faith that his father did. John Osteen's books and teachings are still widely read and studied today.
