Early Life
James Thomas Aubrey, Jr. was born on April 15, 1916 in Los Angeles, California. He was the son of James Thomas Aubrey, Sr., a successful businessman, and his wife, Mary. He was raised in a wealthy family and attended private schools in the area. He was an excellent student and was accepted to Harvard University, where he studied economics and business.
Career
After graduating from Harvard, James Thomas Aubrey, Jr. began his career in the entertainment industry. He started out as a production assistant at MGM Studios in 1939. He quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to vice president of production in 1950. During his time at MGM, he was responsible for producing some of the studio's most successful films, including The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, and Ben-Hur.
In 1959, Aubrey was appointed president of CBS Television. During his tenure, he was responsible for the development of some of the most popular television shows of the era, including The Twilight Zone, The Andy Griffith Show, and Gunsmoke. He also oversaw the launch of the first color television broadcasts.
Later Life
In 1965, Aubrey left CBS and returned to MGM as president and CEO. He was responsible for the studio's resurgence in the 1970s, producing films such as Rocky, The Godfather, and The Sting. He also oversaw the launch of the first pay-per-view television service.
In 1979, Aubrey retired from MGM and moved to Florida. He died in 1994 at the age of 78.
Legacy
James Thomas Aubrey, Jr. was a pioneer in the entertainment industry. He was responsible for the development of some of the most successful films and television shows of the era.
