Early Life

Howard A. Chinn was born in San Francisco, California on April 15, 1945. He was the son of a Chinese immigrant father and a Caucasian mother. He grew up in a working-class neighborhood and attended public schools. He was an excellent student and graduated from high school with honors.

Education

Howard went on to attend the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He then attended the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree. After graduating from law school, Howard worked as a law clerk for a federal judge in San Francisco.

Career

Howard began his legal career as an associate at a San Francisco law firm. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a partner at a prominent law firm. In 1989, he was appointed to the California Supreme Court, where he served for five years. During his tenure on the court, he wrote several landmark opinions on civil rights and civil liberties.

After leaving the court, Howard returned to private practice. He was a partner at a prominent Los Angeles law firm for several years before joining the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law. He taught courses in civil procedure, constitutional law, and civil rights. He also served as a visiting professor at several other law schools.

In addition to his legal career, Howard was an active member of the community. He served on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. He was also a member of the California Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

Legacy

Howard A. Chinn was a respected lawyer and jurist who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice.
