His father was Scottish and his mom was of Irish and English roots. He is a British by nationality and is of Scottish, Irish, and English ethnicity. McShane experienced childhood in Davyhulme, Manchester and went to Stretford Grammar School. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
