Ian David McShane was born on September 29, 1942 in Blackburn, United Kingdom. He is the child of Scottish footballer Harry McShane and Irene McShane. His father was Scottish and his mom was of Irish and English roots. He is a British by nationality and is of Scottish, Irish, and English ethnicity. McShane experienced childhood in Davyhulme, Manchester and went to Stretford Grammar School. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He was a student there when he appeared in his first film, 1962's The Wild and the Willing. He played the role of Harry Brown. Around then, he was a member of the National Youth Theater.

Ian McShane has been married multiple times throughout his life. His first spouse was Suzan Farmer, an actress. They got married in 1964 but separated from each other four years after the fact in 1968. From that point forward, he got married for the second time with Ruth V. Post in 1968. The couple was as one for almost 10 years. They had two children named Kate McShane and Morgan McShane. The couple separated in 1977. In 2010, McShane featured in The Pillars of the Earth as Bishop Waleran Bigod. He was was featured in motion pictures like The Hollow Point, John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick 3, and Jawbone. Since 2017, he has appeared as Mr. Wednesday in the Starz series American Gods.

In September 2019, the director of John Wick 4 hinted that he might consider adding Carrie-Anne Moss or Hugo Weaving to the John Wick universe after so many fans reacted positively to the addition of Laurence Fishburne in John Wick 3.
