Early Life
Gareth Porter was born in 1944 in Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1966. He then went on to earn a master's degree in international relations from the University of Chicago in 1968.
Career
Porter began his career as a journalist in the late 1960s, covering the Vietnam War for the Associated Press. He then went on to write for the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. He has also written for the Nation, the New Republic, and the American Prospect.
In the 1970s, Porter began to focus on the history of U.S. foreign policy and the role of the military-industrial complex in shaping it. He wrote several books on the subject, including A Peace Denied: The United States, Vietnam, and the Paris Agreement (1975), Perils of Dominance: Imbalance of Power and the Road to War in Vietnam (2005), and Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare (2014).
