Elizabeth Claire Kemper was born on May 2, 1980 in Kansas City, Missouri. She is the second of four children of Dorothy Ann and David Woods Kemper. Her family is perhaps the wealthiest family in the State of Missouri. Kemper's father was the director and CEO of Commerce Bancshares, a bank holding organization established by the Kemper family. Her family moved to St. Louis when Kemper was five years of age. She went to Conway Elementary School in the St. Louis suburb of Ladue. From that point onward, she went to high school at John Burroughs School, where she built up an enthusiasm for theater and improvisational satire.

In 1999, Kemper made her presentation at the Veiled Prophet Ball, where she was named the Veiled Prophet Queen of Love and Beauty. She graduated from Princeton University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts in English.
